He was also a monk living at the Camaldolese Monastery of St. Michael. This monastery sat on the island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon. In his workshop, he worked on making very special maps. He was known for his incredible skill in drawing the world. His work helped people understand where different lands were located. He was even called an incomparable cosmographer by people of his time.

To make his maps, Fra Mauro used many different sources of information. In his younger years, he worked as a merchant and a soldier. These jobs allowed him to travel to the Middle East. Later, his life as a monk meant he could not travel as much. Instead, he talked to merchants when they returned from sea voyages. He listened to their stories about far-off places. This helped him gather facts for his big world map.

Around the year 1450, he began his most famous project. This was a huge world map known as the Fra Mauro map. It was a major work that gathered much of the world's knowledge. The map is very large and covers over five square meters. It contains thousands of small illustrations and written notes. The map shows parts of Asia, Africa, and Europe. It was the most detailed and accurate map made up to that time.

Making the map was a big job that took several years. King Afonso V of Portugal asked him to create it. Fra Mauro worked with a sailor named Andrea Bianco to finish the task. They worked together between the years 1448 and 1459. The map was finally completed on 24 April 1459. A copy was sent to Portugal with a letter from the Doge of Venice. This letter was meant for Prince Henry the Navigator to encourage more sea travel.

Fra Mauro died in 1464 while making a copy of his map.

Even today, his name is remembered in space. There is a crater on the Moon named after him. There is also a place called the Fra Mauro formation. The Apollo 14 mission visited this area in February 1971. Astronauts Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell explored it. His legacy lives on from Earth to the Moon.
