He lived in the Republic of Venice. He was also a monk. He lived in a monastery on the island of Murano.

In his youth, he was a soldier and a merchant. He traveled to the Middle East. Later, he worked in a workshop to make maps. He could not travel as much as before. Instead, he talked to sailors. They told him about their trips across the sea. This helped him learn about new lands.

Around the year 1450, he made a great world map. This map is called the Fra Mauro map. It is very big. It covers more than five square meters. The map has thousands of small drawings and notes. It was the most accurate map of its time. He worked with a sailor named Andrea Bianco to finish it.

People still remember him today. There is a large crater on the Moon named after him. There is also a place on the Moon called the Fra Mauro formation. Astronauts have visited this area on the Moon.
