Piri Reis was a highly influential Ottoman Turkish cartographer, admiral, and navigator.

He lived from approximately 1470 to 1553. He is most famous for his 1513 world map and his nautical atlas, the Kitab-ı Bahriye. This atlas is often called the "Book of the Sea." His work was unique because it integrated classical sources with new European discoveries. This made his cartography more engaged with the Age of Discovery than other Ottoman works of his time.

His maritime career began in his youth under the guidance of his uncle, Kemal Reis. Kemal Reis was a notable corsair. A corsair is a type of pirate that operates with state approval. Piri Reis began sailing on his uncle's ship around 1481. During these early years, he gained immense seafaring knowledge. He also took part in various naval actions, such as the bombardment of Málaga in 1487. He even assisted in transporting religious refugees from Spain to North Africa after 1492. These decades of service provided the raw data for his future maps.

Piri Reis used several distinct methods to create his detailed charts. He combined his own personal notes and charts with information from contemporary explorers. For his 1513 world map, he utilized a map by Christopher Columbus. He also incorporated information from Portuguese explorers. His cartography was not just about drawing landmasses. It was a synthesis of practical seafaring experience and global geopolitical shifts. This approach allowed him to depict the recently explored shores of Africa and the Americas.

His career included significant roles within the Ottoman Navy. He fought in the Ottoman–Venetian wars as a captain. He operated a galley, which is a shallow warship moved by oars. This vessel was ideal for navigating Mediterranean coasts. In 1499, he participated in the Battle of Zonchio with a fleet of 270 ships. Later, he was commissioned by the grand vizier, Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, to expand his atlas. The resulting second version of the Kitab-ı Bahriye was completed by 1526.

The importance of his work grew through both its utility and its rediscovery. During his life, the Kitab-ı Bahriye was widely copied. However, his first world map was lost to history for centuries. It was finally rediscovered in 1929 during renovations at the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. This discovery made his career a major point of national pride for Turkey. The map is scientifically significant because it provides a link to lost maps from the early 1500s.

Some people have proposed fringe theories regarding his 1513 map. They suggested the map depicted an ice-free Antarctica. However, scientific studies have disproven this hypothesis. Researchers found no significant similarities between the map and the subglacial coast of Antarctica. Despite these debunked claims, the speculation has helped maintain high interest in his cartographic legacy. The map remains a vital piece of historical evidence regarding early global exploration.

In his final years, Piri Reis held the high rank of grand admiral of the Ottoman fleet in the Indian Ocean. He moved from his home in Constantinople to Egypt to prepare for this command. He sold his properties, including his vineyard, suggesting he did not intend to return. In 1547, he led a fleet of 60 ships to assist in Yemen.

He faced difficulties because the Portuguese used large ocean-going sailing ships. In contrast, the Ottoman fleet relied on galleys, which were better for coastal warfare. His career ended following a retreat from the siege of Hormuz Island.
