Said bin Sultan was a very powerful ruler from Oman. He was the fifth leader of the Al Bu Said dynasty. His time as Sultan began in 1804. This was a difficult time for his family. His father, Sultan bin Ahmed, died during a trip to Basra. After that, many people fought to lead the land. Said had to win these fights to become the sole ruler.

Becoming the leader was not an easy job for Said. His uncle, Qais bin Ahmad, tried to take power. Another man named Badr bin Saif also ruled for a while. Badr was not very popular with the people. In 1806, Said killed Badr in Barka to take control. After this, the people saw Said as a liberator. His aunt, Sayyida Aisha bint Sultan, even helped him by acting as a regent. She was a strong woman who led troops in male clothing.

Said worked hard to make his empire rich and strong. He moved his capital from Muscat to Stone Town in Zanzibar in 1840. This move helped him reach the highest point of his power. He wanted to trade with many different parts of the world. In 1835, he signed a treaty with the United States. He even sent a ship to America to help trade grow. He also conquered Mombasa in 1837, which is in Kenya today.

Said also made important choices about how people were treated. He wanted to limit the slave trade in his lands. In 1822, he signed the Moresby Treaty to help with this. Later, in 1845, he signed the Hamerton Treaty to restrict the trade even more. These were big steps in how his empire worked. He also worked with the East India Company during hard times. These rules helped shape the way his lands were run.

Said bin Sultan had a very large family with 36 children. When he died in 1856, his empire was divided between his sons. His son Thuwaini bin Said became the Sultan of Muscat and Oman. His other son, Majid bin Said, became the Sultan of Zanzibar. Many things from Said's life are kept safe today. You can find his silver and other items at the National Museum in Muscat. His story shows how one leader changed a whole region.
