Pierre Duhem was a French scientist. He lived from 1861 to 1916. He studied many parts of science. He worked with thermodynamics, which is the study of heat and energy. He also studied how liquids move.

Duhem was a great historian. He read many old books. He found that people in the Middle Ages studied science too. He showed that science grew in a steady way. It did not just start with new ideas. It grew from old ones.

Pierre also thought about how science works. This is called the philosophy of science. He had a famous idea. He said we cannot test just one idea at a time. When we do an experiment, we test a whole group of ideas. If an experiment fails, we might not know which idea was wrong. This idea is called confirmation holism.

Duhem was a Catholic man. This shaped how he saw the world. He did not agree with some new ideas of his time. He even disagreed with Albert Einstein. Duhem wanted science to stay logical and clear. He spent much of his life teaching at the University of Bordeaux.
