Pierre Duhem was a very important scientist from France. He lived from 1861 to 1916. He studied many different parts of the physical world. He worked on thermodynamics, which is the study of heat and energy. He also studied hydrodynamics, or how liquids move. He even looked at the theory of elasticity.

Duhem was also a great historian of science. This means he studied how science has changed over time. He was famous for his work on the European Middle Ages. He wanted to show how people studied the world long ago.

Duhem had a very specific way of looking at science. He believed that all physical things come from energy. He thought that heat, movement, and electricity all followed the same rules. This idea is called energetics. He tried to show that everything could be explained by thermodynamics.

He also had a famous idea about how experiments work. He called this confirmation holism. He said we cannot test just one single idea at a time. Instead, we test a whole group of ideas and theories all at once. If an experiment does not work, we might not know which specific idea was wrong.

Duhem was born in Paris on 10 June 1861. His father worked in the textile industry. Pierre went to a school called the Collège Stanislas. There, a teacher named Jules Moutier helped him love physics. In 1882, Duhem went to a top school called the École normale supérieure. He earned degrees in math and physics there.

He wrote a big paper for his doctorate in 1888. This paper was about the theory of magnetization dynamics. His early career was sometimes hard because of disagreements with other scientists.

Duhem lived a very busy life of study. He worked at the University of Lille from 1887 to 1893. Later, he worked at the University of Rennes for a short time. Most of his career was spent at the University of Bordeaux.

He wrote many books and papers. One of his big projects was a ten-volume history called Le système du monde. He also wrote a book in 1906 called The Aim and Structure of Physical Theory. He even wrote about his faith in a section called Physics of a Believer.

It is helpful to think of Duhem as a bridge. He connected the old ideas of the Middle Ages to modern science. Many people thought the Middle Ages had no science. Duhem proved that people like Nicole Oresme and Roger Bacon were very smart.

He showed that science grew in a steady way. It was like a long path of small improvements. He also disagreed with famous ideas like Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Duhem wanted science to stay logical and easy to understand for everyone.
