Many different groups of people wore this hat in ancient times. These included the Thracians, Dacians, Persians, Medes, Scythians, and Trojans. While it was once just a piece of clothing, it later became a powerful symbol. Today, it represents freedom and the idea of liberty.

You can even see it on the Smurfs, who wear white versions of these caps.

To make these caps, people used soft materials like wool or leather.

Some versions were designed with long flaps that covered the ears and the neck. In the ancient Iranian world, these hats were sometimes called a tiara. The shape could change depending on who was wearing it. For example, the king wore a special upright version. High-ranking members of the Median upper class wore tiaras with high crests. These details helped show a person's rank or role.

History shows that many cultures used this style of hat. The oldest known pictures of the cap are found at Persepolis in Iran.

Ancient Greeks often saw these hats on people from the east. They used the name "Phrygian" to describe these neighbors. The cap appeared in Greek art on many famous figures. You can see it on the legendary poet Orpheus and the goddess Bendis. It was also shown on heroes like Paris and Aeneas in old paintings.

In the Roman world, the cap appeared in many different ways.

On Trajan's Column, Dacian warriors are shown wearing them. The cap also appeared in art for the religion of Mithraism. In early Christian art, the three wise men were often shown wearing them. This was because people believed these men were experts in magic and astrology. Even in the 2nd century, the cap was used to show different groups of people in Roman art.

The cap became a symbol of freedom because of a mix-up in history.

Long ago, Romans used a felt cap called a pileus to show a person was free. During the 18th century, people began to confuse the pileus with the Phrygian cap. This happened during the American and French Revolutions. Because of this, the Phrygian shape became a sign of republican government. Nations like Argentina, Cuba, and Nicaragua even put it on their coats of arms to show their struggle for independence.
