This is a big question. People have many different ideas about it. Some say a person can use reason. Others say a person has a mind that is aware of itself. Being a person might also mean being part of a group. This could mean having a family or owning things.

Different cultures have different rules for what makes a person. In law, being a person is very important. It means you have rights and duties. Most people think humans are persons. But some laws say companies are persons too. Some people wonder if animals or even robots could be persons.

We also wonder about personal identity. This asks how we stay the same person over time. Even as our bodies change, are we still us? Some thinkers say it is our physical body. Others say it is our soul or our memories. Long ago, the word came from masks used by actors. In ancient Greece, these masks were called prosopon.
