The word "people" has many meanings. It can mean a large group of citizens. It can also mean a specific group. This group might share a culture or a nation.

In law, "the people" is a very important idea. It helps show who holds the power. The Charter of the United Nations says that peoples have rights. They have the right to self-determination. This means they can choose their own path.

History shows us this idea in action. Long ago, the Roman Republic used a special name. They said they ruled for the Senate and People of Rome. Even when leaders became very strong, they used this name.

Today, some places use the name "People's Republic." This is often used by states with socialism. In some U.S. states, like New York, laws are different. In court, cases are brought in the name of "the People." This shows that the citizens hold the power. Other places, like Ireland, do this too.
