A duty is a commitment to act. It is something people expect you to do.

Some duties come from laws. You might pay taxes or vote. You may also serve on a jury. Some duties are about what you must do. Others are about what you must not do. This is called a negative duty.

Many people feel a duty to their families. In some cultures, this is very important. In East Asia, people follow ideas from Confucius. He taught a way of life called filial piety. This means children show respect to their parents.

One old painting shows a woman protecting her family from a bear. This was seen as a great act of duty.

Thinkers have different views on this idea. The Roman thinker Cicero said duties come from many places. They can come from being human or having a job. The leader Marcus Aurelius said duty comes from reason. He thought we should do our duty to help our community. But the thinker Friedrich Nietzsche had a different view. He worried that duty could make people act like machines. He thought people should follow their own desires instead.
