Penthouse is a magazine made for grown-ups. Bob Guccione started it in London in 1965. He later made an American version in 1969.

The magazine used a skeleton key as its symbol. Guccione used a soft style for his photos. He did not have professional training. He used his knowledge of painting to make the pictures look soft. This became a famous look for the magazine.

Penthouse was not just about photos. It also had many news stories. Some writers used the magazine to look into government secrets. They wrote about scandals and corruption. This helped the magazine become very successful.

Over time, the magazine faced many changes. It tried to show more explicit content to boost sales. This caused some companies to stop showing ads. The rise of the internet also made it hard to sell print copies. The magazine faced many money problems and filed for bankruptcy. New owners later made the content softer. The magazine's future is still not certain today.
