He started a famous magazine called Penthouse in 1965. He wanted to compete with Playboy magazine. Penthouse was known for being more bold. It showed more adult content than other magazines. It also had deep stories about government secrets. Guccione used his own photos for many early issues. He also wrote about the art world.

Guccione became very wealthy. In 1982, he was on a list of rich people. He owned a very large home in Manhattan. He spent a lot of money on big projects. He spent $45 million to build a luxury hotel. This hotel was called the Haludovo Palace Hotel. However, that hotel went bankrupt the next year. He also spent $17.5 million on a film. He lost much money on other big plans too. In the 1990s, the internet changed things. People could see adult content online for free. This meant fewer people bought his magazines. His company ran out of money in 2003. Guccione had to leave his job as chairman.
