He was a mathematician and a philosopher. He wrote many short notes. He wanted to make a big book. This book would defend the Christian faith. But Pascal died in 1662. He did not finish his work.

Other people gathered his notes. They published them in 1670. The book is called *Pensées*. It is a collection of small sayings.

Pascal had many ideas in his notes. He thought people find truth with their hearts. He said reason alone is not enough. He also wrote about God. He said God is hidden from people. Some people use logic to find God. Pascal thought these proofs were weak. He felt people must seek God with their whole heart. The Catholic Church once banned the book. They did not want it to be printed. Many thinkers still study his work today. Some even say his ideas helped shape new ways of thinking.
