He is famous for a short phrase. In Latin, it is "cogito, ergo sum." In English, we say, "I think, therefore I am."

Descartes wanted to find a certain truth. He tried to doubt everything he knew. He wondered if his senses could trick him. He even wondered if a god could deceive him. But he found one thing he could not doubt. He could not doubt that he was doubting. To doubt, one must think. If a person thinks, that person must exist.

Even if a person is being tricked, they must exist to be tricked!

He first wrote this idea in French in 1637. He later wrote it in Latin.

Some people later wrote it as "I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am." Some thinkers had different views. One man named Pierre Gassendi asked a hard question. He asked if we can truly say "I" am thinking. He thought it might just be that "thinking is occurring." Still, Descartes's idea became a major part of Western thought. It gave people a firm place to start finding truth.
