Doubt is when your mind is not sure about something.

You might feel stuck between two different ideas. This feeling can lead to indecision. You might wait to act because you fear a mistake.

Many thinkers use doubt as a tool. The philosopher Descartes used it to study ideas. Logic helps us tell what is certain from what is just likely. Ludwig Wittgenstein said doubt and certainty are tied together. If we are not certain of facts, we may not be certain of words.

In religion, doubt can lead to new beliefs. Some people believe we cannot know if gods exist. This is called agnosticism. The thinker Søren Kierkegaard said true belief includes doubt. He felt doubt is the part of our mind that weighs facts.

Lawyers also use doubt in court. In many cases, the state must prove a person is guilty. They must do this beyond a reasonable doubt. This means a fair person must feel sure. Science also uses doubt. It helps scientists decide if they need more research. Doubt can be the start of a new study.
