Skepticism

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Skepticism is a way of doubting. It is a questioning attitude. People use it when they see a claim. They might think the claim is just a belief. A skeptic does not always say a claim is false. Instead, they often stay neutral. They suspend their judgment. This means they do not pick a side yet. They might feel that there is not enough proof.

Some people use skepticism in many ways. Religious skeptics doubt certain holy ideas. Moral skeptics doubt rules about right and wrong. In science, people use it to test things. They use the scientific method to find facts. This helps doctors find better ways to treat people.

There are different types of skeptics. A moderate skeptic wants strong evidence. They look for proof before they believe. A radical skeptic is different. They might doubt everything. Some even doubt if knowledge is possible at all. In ancient times, people saw it as a way of life. They thought it could lead to inner peace. Pyrrho of Elis was a famous founder of a skeptical school.
