These notes were written by Blaise Pascal. He lived in France during the 17th century. Pascal was both a philosopher and a mathematician. He spent much of his life studying deep ideas. His work was meant to defend the Christian religion. This type of writing is called apologetics.

Because the book is made of short sayings, it is often called aphoristic. This means the writing is brief and full of meaning.

Pascal had a very specific way of thinking about truth. He believed that reason alone cannot find everything. Instead, he argued that we find truth through the heart. To Pascal, the heart helps us know basic truths. He thought that people who only use logic might struggle. He also discussed how people view God. Pascal believed that God is often hidden from human knowledge. He felt that religious people should not try to prove God through simple logic. He thought such proofs might actually make faith look weak to others.

Pascal began working on these notes before he died in 1662.

He had planned to turn these notes into a complete book. He likely intended to organize them into a clear structure. However, he passed away before the task was finished. After his death, others collected his various drafts and notes. They published the collection in 1670. Because the notes were not finished, the order is not perfect. Different editors have tried to organize them by theme or date.

There are many important facts about the history of this book. The first English translation was written by John Walker in 1688. Later, W. F. Trotter made another translation in 1931. This version included an introduction by the writer T. S. Eliot. The book was even censored by the Catholic Church at one time. The *Index Librorum Prohibitorum* forbade its printing. This happened because the book conflicted with the official views of the Church. Many scholars still work to study and organize these texts today.

Many famous thinkers have been influenced by Pascal's ideas.

The philosopher Martin Heidegger studied Pascal's work deeply. Friedrich Nietzsche also had complex thoughts about Pascal. He called Pascal a very logical Christian. Even Pope Francis spoke about the book in 2023. He called the *Pensées* a monumental work of literature. These thinkers show how much Pascal's ideas still matter. His writings continue to spark wonder and debate in the world.
