He was born in Moscow to a noble family. His family came from Georgia. Pavel joined the army when he was young. He fought in many wars. In 1802, the Tsar made him a leader in the Caucasus. This is a large area of mountains and land.

Pavel wanted to win more land for Russia. He captured the city of Ganja. This led to a war with Iran. He also fought for control in places like Armenia. Many people saw him as a brave leader. But others thought he was very cruel. He treated local people harshly to make them obey.

In 1806, Pavel went to the city of Baku. He wanted to make a deal with the local leader. But the meeting was a trap. The local leader's men killed him.
