He grew up learning how to write by hand. This helped him understand how to design printed pages.

At first, Jan loved a style called the New Typography. This style used very simple and clean shapes. He liked letters that did not have extra strokes on their ends. He also liked pages that were not centered. Jan wanted to find a way to make information easy to read.

He used math to find the best way to place text on a page. This helped books look balanced and pleasing to the eye.

Later in life, Jan changed his mind. He thought his old ideas were too extreme. He began to love classic styles again. He designed a very popular set of letters called Sabon.
