Allen Lane was a famous book maker from Britain.

He helped start a company called Penguin Books in 1935. He worked with his brothers, Richard and John. Before this, Allen worked for his uncle. His family even changed their last name to Lane. This helped them keep the family business.

Allen had a big idea on a train trip. He could not find a good book to read. He wanted to make cheap books for everyone. These were called paperbacks. He wanted them to look very nice, too. An artist even went to the zoo to sketch penguins. This was for the book covers. He wanted people to know a Penguin book right away.

His company grew very large. He started Pelican Books for facts and Puffin Books for children. By the 1950s, Penguin had offices in Australia and the United States. Allen was a very stubborn leader. He followed his own ideas. He later had to retire because of cancer. He died in 1970. A new company even named a book line after him to honor his work.
