He changed how people buy and read books. Before he started his own company, he worked for his uncle at Bodley Head. His family even changed their last name to Lane. They did this to keep the family business running. Lane was a very creative leader. He often used his imagination to solve hard jobs. He was knighted in 1952 for his work.

His big idea came during a train trip in 1934.

He was traveling from a visit with Agatha Christie. At Exeter St Davids station, he could not find a good book. He wanted to make cheap books called paperbacks. These books would be good enough for a vending machine. He even set up a machine called the "Penguincubator" in London. This allowed people to buy books very easily.

Making these books was a big task.

Lane had to find books that were already successful. He asked other publishers to let him reprint them. He also wanted the books to look beautiful. He believed good design should not be expensive. An artist named Edward Young designed the covers. He even went to the zoo to sketch real penguins. This helped create a look that everyone could recognize.

Lane and his brothers founded Penguin Books in 1935.

The company became its own business in 1936. He later started Pelican Books in 1937 for facts. He also started Puffin Books in 1940. In 1945, he began the Penguin Classics series. By the 1950s, the company had offices in Australia and the United States. This showed how much his idea had grown.

Many people know Penguin books today.

Even though some people disagreed with him, his ideas worked. He was a very stubborn man who followed his intuition. Later in life, he had to retire due to bowel cancer. He died in 1970 in Northwood, Middlesex. In 2010, a company named a new book line after him. This keeps his name alive for readers everywhere.
