society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Paralegals are legal experts who help lawyers. They have special training or work experience. They do not have a license to practice law. This means they cannot give legal advice. They also cannot represent clients in court. In the United States, lawyers are responsible for a paralegal's work.

Paralegals do many important tasks. They research laws and write legal papers. They also help manage cases and organize files. This work is different from a legal secretary. A secretary mostly handles office tasks. A paralegal does deeper legal work. This helps keep costs lower for people who need help.

In some places, the rules are different. In Ontario, Canada, paralegals can be licensed. They can even help people in some courts. Some areas in the US and Canada have new roles. These roles help people who cannot afford a lawyer. These experts work in areas like family law.
