Paralegals handle many important tasks every day. They perform research to find facts about laws. They also write documents like motions or research memos. Some paralegals help manage entire legal projects. They might summarize depositions or prepare answers to questions. They also help with paperwork for things like divorce or bankruptcy. This work is deeper than what a legal secretary does.

This profession has a long history in the United States. In 1967, the American Bar Association endorsed the idea of paralegals. One year later, in 1968, they started a committee for legal assistants. For a long time, people used the name legal assistants. In 2018, the American Bar Association changed their definition. They removed the term legal assistant from the official name. Now, they focus on the term paralegal.

Rules for paralegals change depending on where they live. In the United States, there are five things only lawyers can do. Lawyers must establish the client relationship and give legal advice. Only lawyers can sign legal papers for a client. Lawyers also appear in court and set the fees. In some places, like Ontario, Canada, paralegals are licensed. They can provide services and appear in some lower courts.

Other people learn while they are working on the job. In the past, many people started with only a high school diploma. Today, some areas use new titles for licensed workers. These include names like Limited License Legal Technicians. These roles help people get legal help more easily.
