It helps people protect their rights to homes, health, and school.

In the past, things worked differently. Long ago, poor people relied on the kindness of lawyers. They often had to ask for help as a favor. In the late 1800s, workers in Europe began to ask for more rights. They wanted help if they got sick or hurt at work. By the early 1900s, many countries made laws to pay lawyers to help.

After World War II, many states took on more work. They helped people with many needs. At first, legal aid mostly helped with family law and divorce. By the 1960s and 1970s, people wanted more help. They used legal aid to talk to state officials. This helped them get the benefits they were owed. Today, legal aid can come from many places. It can come from law centers or community clinics. Some lawyers work for free to help others.
