Pantyhose are close-fitting legwear that cover the body from the waist to the toes.

In British English, these garments are often called sheer tights. They serve several practical and aesthetic purposes for the wearer. They can hide physical features such as bruises, scars, or leg hair. They can also provide a tan-like appearance for people with very pale skin. Additionally, they help reduce visible panty lines and ease chafing between the thighs or between the feet and footwear.

The construction of pantyhose follows a standard design to ensure a proper fit. The waist features a strong elastic band to hold the garment in place. The panty area, which covers the hips and buttocks, uses thicker material than the legs. A gusset, or crotch covering, is included and is sometimes made of porous cotton. The legs are made of the thinnest usable fabrics and maintain a consistent construction down to the toes. Most modern pantyhose are composed of nylon blended with spandex. Spandex provides the elasticity needed for the garment to be form-fitting.

There are many different styles of pantyhose available today. The thickness of the fabric is measured by a numerical value called denier or dtex. This term refers to the weight of the yarn used. A low denier, such as 3, results in an extremely thin and rare fabric. A standard sheer pair typically has a denier of 20. Higher deniers, reaching up to 250, result in opaque tights. Other styles include control-top pantyhose, which have a reinforced section to boost a slimmer figure. Sheer-to-waist styles remain the same thickness from the waist to the toes. Other variations include open-toe, fishnet, and open-crotch designs.

The history of these garments is closely linked to changing women's hemlines. Before the 1920s, women generally covered their ankles with long skirts. As hemlines rose in the 1920s, stockings became popular for warmth and coverage. Originally, sheer hosiery was made of silk or rayon. After DuPont invented nylon in 1938, nylon became a common material for stockings. During the 1940s and 1950s, film and stage producers often sewed stockings to the briefs of performers. This practice was seen in popular movies like Daddy Long Legs.

Several inventors contributed to the development of modern pantyhose. In 1953, Allen Gant Sr. of Glen Raven Knitting Mills developed "Panti-Legs." These products reached store shelves around 1959 as an alternative to stockings and girdles. In 1956, Ernest G. Rice submitted a patent for a "Combination Stockings and Panty." This design was later adopted by other manufacturers. In 1974, actress Julie Newmar filed a patent for pantyhose with a shaping band. Improved textile manufacturing in the 1960s made these garments more affordable. By 1970, U.S. sales of pantyhose exceeded sales of stockings for the first time.

Despite their popularity, pantyhose face certain challenges and criticisms. Because nylon is not an absorbent material like cotton, perspiration can lead to bacterial growth and odor. Some products now include silver to help prevent these issues. The thin fabric is also prone to "running" or laddering if it snags on a sharp surface. Some wearers use clear nail polish to stop a run from growing. There are also environmental concerns because nylon is not biodegradable. However, some organizations recycle old hosiery into products like roofing felt or pet toys.

While often viewed as women's fashion, pantyhose are used by many different groups. Men may wear them for thermal protection, therapeutic relief, or fashion.

For example, race horse jockeys wear them to glide freely while moving at rapid paces. Some fishermen wear them to protect their skin from jellyfish stingers. In the 2010s, form-fitting opaque leggings became a popular alternative for casual wear. However, pantyhose remain a common choice for formal dress and certain school or workplace uniforms.
