Pantyhose are close-fitting garments that cover the body from the waist to the toes.

They are often called sheer tights in British English. People wear them for many different reasons. They can hide physical features like bruises, scars, or leg hair. They can even give very pale skin a tan-like look. Many people use them to reduce visible panty lines. They also help stop chafing between the thighs or between feet and shoes.

Making pantyhose involves using specific types of fabric. Most are made of nylon or fibers blended with nylon. Many also include spandex to help them stretch and fit the body.

The thickness of the fabric is measured by a number called denier. A low denier means the fabric is very thin and see-through. A high denier means the fabric is thicker and more opaque. Some styles have a control-top, which uses thicker material to shape the figure. Other styles, like sheer-to-waist, stay the same thickness from the waist to the toes.

The history of these garments is tied to changing fashion. Before the 1920s, most women wore long skirts that covered their ankles. As hemlines rose in the 1920s, stockings became very popular. In the 1940s, stockings were often made of silk or rayon. After 1938, when DuPont invented nylon, stockings began to be made of this new material. In the 1950s, dancers and actresses sometimes sewed stockings directly to their briefs. This helped them stay comfortable while performing on stage or in movies.

Many people helped bring modern pantyhose to the world. In 1953, Allen Gant Sr. developed a product called "Panti-Legs." These were sold in stores starting around 1959. Another inventor, Ernest G. Rice, created a design called "Combination Stockings and Panty" in 1956. In 1974, the actress Julie Newmar filed a patent for a special shaping band. By 1970, sales of pantyhose in the U.S. actually became higher than sales of stockings.

This trend continued through the 1970s and 1980s.

Today, pantyhose are used in many different ways. While many women wear them for formal dress, they are also used in school or work uniforms. Even men can wear them for warmth or fashion.

Some men, like race horse jockeys, wear them to help them glide easily. Fishermen might wear them to protect their skin from jellyfish stings. Some people even use them for athletic activities. While fashion changes, these garments remain a useful tool for many people around the world.
