Leggings are a versatile category of leg attire that has evolved significantly over centuries.

Today, the term usually describes elastic, close-fitting, high-rise garments. These are often worn by women as a substitute for tights or leg warmers. However, the definition of leggings has shifted based on the era and the wearer. Historically, they served as protective gear for soldiers or specialized clothing for infants. In modern fashion, they have become a staple of the athleisure trend. This trend involves wearing activewear, or clothing designed for exercise, in casual or social settings.

The way leggings are constructed depends on their intended purpose.

Many athletic versions are made from a synthetic blend. A common mixture is 90% nylon and 10% Lycra, which is a stretchy synthetic fiber. These nylon-Lycra leggings often appear shinier than those made from cotton. Some designs include racing stripes or reflective patterns to improve visibility and safety during exercise. Other variations, such as "jeggings," are engineered to mimic the appearance of denim jeans. Jeggings were created to meet the high demand for tight-fitting styles during the resurgence of skinny jeans in the late 2000s.

Leggings appear in several distinct forms across different cultures and activities. In the military, they have taken the form of puttees or canvas wraps. In sports, they are used by runners, dancers, and soccer players. Some athletes wear them alone, while others layer them under shorts or skirts. For example, field hockey players might wear them under skirts with socks over the top. In the world of men's fashion, a style called "meggings" emerged. This is a portmanteau of the words "men" and "leggings." These are often styled with large, baggy tops or layered beneath shorts. K-pop idols have also popularized wearing leggings under shorts since the 2010s.

The history of leg coverings is quite extensive.

From the 13th to the 16th century, men in Europe wore separate hose. In the Scottish Highlands, people wore trews, which are a form of leggings. Some Native Americans used buckskin leather to create their own leggings. During the 19th century, leggings were common clothing for infants, often paired with jackets. Soldiers and trappers also used leather or wool leg-wrappings for protection. The modern fashion era for leggings began in the 1960s, drawing inspiration from the form-fitting clothes worn by dancers.

Military use provides a detailed look at how leggings functioned as tools.

Since the late 19th century, infantry soldiers used leggings to keep dirt, sand, and mud out of their shoes. They also provided ankle support. Initially, soldiers used puttees, which were thick strips of wool cloth. These functioned like large bandages and were held in place by a strap. Later, armies transitioned to canvas leggings that fastened with buttons or buckles. These often featured an adjustable stirrup that passed under the sole of the shoe. During World War II, the U.S. Army eventually replaced these with the Type III Field Boot, which had a taller leather upper.

Despite their popularity, leggings have been the subject of significant societal debate.

A central question is whether leggings qualify as "pants" or merely as an accessory. In a 2016 poll by Glamour magazine, 61% of readers felt leggings should only be worn as an accessory. Conversely, Good Housekeeping suggested they count as pants if they are opaque enough to hide underwear. This debate has led to various restrictions in schools. In 2013, schools in Sonoma County, California, banned them as outerwear. Other schools in Oklahoma, Illinois, and North Carolina have also implemented similar dress codes.

Leggings connect to broader discussions regarding fashion, gender, and social rules. The rise of the athleisure movement shows how clothing for vigorous activity has moved into the mainstream. At the same time, the controversy over school dress codes has led to discussions about "body shaming." Critics argue that restricting leggings can unfairly target individuals. Even in professional sports, the acceptance of leggings has grown. For instance, leggings and bike shorts are now allowed as part of professional tennis outfits on the WTA tour. This shows how a single garment can move from a military tool to a high-fashion item and a regulated school uniform.
