Panties

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Panties are form-fitting underpants primarily worn by women. They serve as a fundamental layer of clothing for hygiene and comfort.

Most designs feature an elastic waistband to ensure the garment stays in place. A crucial component is the crotch panel, which covers the genitalia. This panel is usually lined with absorbent materials like cotton to promote breathability.

To maintain a secure fit, the waistband and leg openings are often constructed from an elastomer, which is a stretchy material.

The construction of panties involves several specific parts and materials. Typically, the garment consists of two main pieces: a front and a rear. These pieces are joined together by seams at the sides and the crotch. Many designs also include a gusset, which is an additional piece of fabric in the crotch area. Makers select a wide variety of materials based on the desired feel or function. Common fabrics include cotton, lace, nylon, polyester, and silk. Other specialized materials include mesh, lycra, latex, leather, PVC, satin, and even rawhide.

Terminology for these garments varies significantly across different English-speaking regions. In the United States and Canada, "panties" is the standard term for female underwear bottoms. However, in the United Kingdom and Ireland, the term "knickers" is more common. In several Commonwealth countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, people may use "undies" or "underwear." Unlike "panties," the terms "undies" and "underwear" are gender-neutral. They can refer to both male and female styles. In Australia, "undies" is a frequent term for both panties and male underpants.

The history of these garments shows a clear trend toward shorter and more specialized designs. In the 1920s, underwear resembling modern panties was first invented. At that time, long drawers were shortened to make them less cumbersome. These early versions were heavily decorated and required fastening. Some even used bows, a decorative element that still appears on some panties today. Between 1930 and 1947, the garments were shortened even further. During this period, manufacturers also transitioned from using linen to using cotton.

By the 1960s, many women in the West wore wide-legged panties instead of a slip. These were often manufactured in vibrant colors and various prints. The 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of bottom-enhancing styles like the thong. Finally, the 2000s introduced newer styles such as boyshorts and hipsters.

Modern panties are often classified by their level of rear coverage. Minimal coverage styles include the C-string, the T-front, the G-string, and the thong.

A C-string is a form of micro-panty that is frameless and uses underwires to stay in place. It covers only the genitalia and is used to avoid visible panty lines. A T-front is a type of G-string where the string reaches the front part. A G-string features a vertical string at the back connecting the crotch to the waistband.

A thong has a waistband similar to a tanga, but the rear coverage is mostly cut away. In some cases, if the fabric peeks above low-riding pants, it is called a "whale tail."

Moderate coverage styles offer a middle ground between minimal and full coverage. The tanga, also known as a Brazilian thong, acts as an intermediate step between thongs and bikinis.

Bikinis and hipsters are also common moderate styles. Bikinis sit at the hip level, though string bikini types may have very narrow side sections. Hipsters are a blend of bikinis and boyshorts, sitting on the hips slightly below the navel.

Another moderate style is "cheekies," which are designed to hug the buttocks using a seam or ruching to accentuate their shape. These often leave the outer portion of the cheeks exposed.

Full coverage styles provide the most fabric and support. Classic briefs feature a waistband that sits very high on the waist. Because they cover much of the area between the waist and thigh, they are sometimes called "granny panties."

High-cut briefs are another option, sitting higher on the waist with larger leg holes to allow for more freedom of movement.

Finally, control briefs are designed to offer support and a slimmer appearance. These often contain stretch materials like spandex and may include firm panels to flatten the tummy or compress the buttocks.

Through these many variations, panties continue to serve diverse functional and aesthetic needs.
