Because it has these big services, it is a very busy place. It is the third-largest city on the island of Sulawesi. In 2024, the population was about 389,959 people.

Long ago, Palu was just a small town for farming. It was much smaller than the nearby town of Donggala. The city grew after it became the capital in 1953.

There are different stories about its name. One story says it comes from a word meaning "raised land." Another story says it comes from a local bamboo plant. In the past, the area had many different kingdoms. These included the Bangga, Pakawa, and Sigi kingdoms.

History in this region has seen many big changes. During the 16th century, people from Portugal came to trade. Later, the Dutch arrived in the 1800s. They made many agreements with local kingdoms like Sigi and Banawa. In 1942, a group called the Merah Putih Movement rose up.

They wanted to fight for Indonesian independence. This movement was connected to a leader named Nani Wartabone. After the wars ended, Palu became part of the Indonesian republic.

Living in Palu requires being ready for nature. The city sits on the Palu-Koro Fault. This means earthquakes happen there quite often. In 2018, a very large earthquake hit the city.

This caused something called soil liquefaction. This is when the ground acts like a liquid. It was the largest event of its kind in the world. Much of the city was destroyed by this. Now, leaders plan to build a new, safer city called Kota Palu Baru.
