A palomino is a beautiful type of horse known for its golden coat.

Most palominos have a mane and tail that are white or light cream. The color of their body can range from a light cream to a dark gold. Some people say the perfect color looks like a newly minted gold coin. These horses are very special and stand out in a show ring. Because they look so striking, they are often used in parades.

This color happens because of a specific way genes work. A palomino has a base coat color called chestnut, which is a reddish shade. A single cream gene works on that red base to create the gold color. This is called incomplete dominance, which means the color does not always pass down the same way. If two palominos have a foal, it might be a palomino. However, it could also be a chestnut or a cremello.

Palominos have been famous in stories and on screens for a long time. They were very popular in movies and on television during the 1940s and 1950s. One very famous horse was named Trigger. He was the smart horse that belonged to the cowboy star Roy Rogers. Another famous horse was Mister Ed, who starred in his own TV show in the 1960s. Even the character Xena had a palomino mare named Argo in her show.

It is easy to confuse palominos with other golden horses. For example, some horses are chestnuts with a flaxen mane and tail. These horses look similar, but they do not have the cream gene. There are also horses called cremellos that have two cream genes. Cremellos have very light hair and pink skin with blue eyes.

Palominos usually have dark skin and brown or amber eyes. They are different from champagne horses, which have mottled skin.

In the United States, there are special groups that keep records of these horses. These are called color breed registries. One is the Palomino Horse Association, which was founded in 1936. Another is the Palomino Horse Breeders of America, founded in 1941. These groups have rules about what a palomino should look like. They look at the color of the coat and the hair in the mane. They also check the height and the shape of the horse's body.
