A palomino is a horse with a gold coat.

It also has a white or light cream mane and tail. The coat can look like a gold coin. Some palominos have dark gold hair. Others are much lighter.

This color comes from a special gene. We call it the cream gene. This gene works on a red base coat. The red base is called chestnut. This happens because of incomplete dominance. This means the color does not always pass down the same way. A palomino parent might have a chestnut foal.
