These animals are not truly wild. They come from domestic horses that once lived with people. These horses might have escaped or been left behind. Over time, they learn to live like wild animals. Their behavior changes to match the world around them. Some horses are called semi-feral if humans still manage them.

Many bands are small, with only three to five animals. Some bands can have over a dozen horses. A small group is often called a harem. A dominant mare, or female horse, usually leads the harem. This group includes other females and their young foals. One stallion, or male horse, often stays with the group.

Many famous feral horses live in the American West. People often call these horses mustangs. Some escaped when Spanish explorers arrived in the 15th century. Today, there are about 300,000 horses in the United States. The Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 protects them. You can find them in many places like Nevada or Georgia. Some horses live on islands like Assateague or Sable Island. These horses may have come from shipwrecks or settlers.

Feral horses live all over our big world.

Australia has the largest population with about 400,000 horses. People there call them brumbies. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, 700 horses live near Cincar Mountain. These horses were set free in the 1950s. They have been protected since the year 2010. In Sardinia, about 700 Giara horses live on a plateau. In India, a herd of 79 horses lives in a national park. These horses came from animals that escaped army camps.

Feral horses can change the land where they live. This can be a hard job for the environment. In places like Australia, they are an introduced species. They might eat too much grass or change the soil. This can hurt the native animals living there. Sometimes, people argue about how to manage them. Some people want to protect them for history. Others worry about the land or farm fences. Managers may use many ways to help the land stay healthy.
