Many dogs live outside of a house or a yard. We call these free-ranging dogs. They are very different from the pets we see in our homes. Some of these dogs have owners who let them roam. These are often called village dogs or rural free-ranging dogs. Other dogs have no owners at all. We call these unowned dogs stray dogs.

How do these dogs find what they need to live? They must adapt to the world around them. Many dogs act as scavengers. They look for food in uncollected waste or garbage. Some dogs hunt small animals for food. Others eat carrion, which is an animal that is already dead. Sometimes, people choose to feed them.

Some dogs are called feral dogs. These dogs were once part of human homes. However, they have returned to a wild state. Feral dogs do not have close contact with people early in life. This lack of socialization makes them avoid humans. They live in a wild state without food provided by people. A dog might become a stray if it is abandoned. It might become feral if it develops a fear of humans.
