These dogs are very special because they grew naturally in Africa. They are not made by formal breeding like many other dogs. One famous type is the Basenji, which is a registered breed. Most other village dogs are not registered.

They first arrived from the Middle East through Egypt. This happened about 5,900 years ago. Scientists found very old dog remains in the Nile Delta. These remains were found at a site called Merimde Beni-Salame. Another old discovery was at Esh Shareinab in Sudan. This happened about 5,500 years ago. The dogs likely traveled alongside domestic sheep and goats. They moved across the land with people who herded livestock.

As people moved, the dogs spread throughout the continent.

They traveled north and south through Africa. Researchers found dog remains at Ntusi in Uganda. These remains date from 925 to 1,055 years ago. Other remains were found at Kalomo in Zambia. These were dated between 950 and 1,000 years ago. The dogs even moved south of the Limpopo River. They settled in many different parts of southern Africa.

A study in 2009 looked at their DNA.

This study showed that village dogs are genetically distinct. This means their genes are different from non-native dogs. The village dogs are like a mosaic of different types. They include native dogs and some mixed-breed dogs. The Basenji belongs to the group of indigenous dogs. However, the Pharaoh Hound is mostly from outside Africa. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is also mostly from a non-African origin.

There are many named types of these dogs.
