Ostriches are truly remarkable creatures. They are the largest and heaviest living birds on our planet.

Even though they are birds, they are flightless. This means they cannot fly through the sky. Instead, they use their strong legs to move. They can run at 70 kilometers per hour. This makes them the fastest birds on land. They are very important to the world today.

These birds have a very interesting way of eating. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. Most of their diet is made of plants. They like to eat leafy greens, roots, and grasses. They also enjoy fruit and succulents. Sometimes they eat small animals like mice, frogs, or lizards. They even eat insects like grasshoppers.

Because they do not have teeth, they swallow sand and pebbles. These small stones help grind their food inside their stomachs.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the genus Struthio in 1758. He used this name for many different birds back then. Later, scientists moved birds like the emu and rhea into their own groups. We now know that ostriches belong to a group called ratites. This group includes other flightless birds like emus and kiwis. Some of these birds, like the elephant bird, are now extinct.

There are two main species living today. The common ostrich lives in many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. The Somali ostrich lives in the Horn of Africa.

These birds have a long history in different lands. Long ago, they lived in places like China and Mongolia. They were even found in the Arabian Peninsula. Fossils from Namibia show they lived there about 21 million years ago. This suggests the genus might have started in Africa.

Humans and ostriches have a long connection. People have used ostrich meat and eggs for thousands of years. They also use ostrich leather for many things. In South Africa, the town of Oudtshoorn is a big center for ostrich products. South Africa produces about 70% of these items globally.

People also use the large feathers for decoration. They can be used as plumes on ceremonial headgear. Some people even make oil from ostrich fat.
