The cassowary is a large, flightless bird that lives in tropical forests.

These birds belong to a group called ratites. Ratites are birds that cannot fly because they lack a keel on their chest bones. You might know other ratites like the emu or the ostrich. There are three living species of cassowary today. The southern cassowary is the most common one.

The northern cassowary is the most recently discovered. It is also the species that faces the most danger of disappearing.

These birds have many special features to help them live in the jungle. They have small wings that look like stiff quills. Their bodies are wedge-shaped to help them push through thick vines and thorns.

On their heads, they have a hard, skin-covered bump called a casque. Scientists think the casque might help them hear deep sounds. It may also help them manage their body heat. Cassowaries also have very strong legs and three-toed feet. Their inner toe has a long, dagger-like claw. This claw is used to defend themselves if they feel threatened.

People have been studying these birds for a long time. A French scientist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson named the genus in 1760. Before him, the famous naturalist Carl Linnaeus studied them too. Linnaeus first mentioned them in 1748, but he changed how he grouped them later. Because of the way dates are recorded, Brisson is considered the main authority for their name. Scientists still work hard to study them today. It is hard because the birds are very shy and hide well in the deep forest.

Cassowaries live in specific parts of the world. They are found in the tropical forests of New Guinea and the Moluccas. They also live in northeastern Australia.

The southern cassowary is a very large bird. Some females can grow to be 5.7 feet tall. They can also weigh more than 132 pounds. In the wild, these birds usually live for about 18 to 20 years. However, birds kept in captivity can live up to 40 years.

These birds play a huge role in keeping the rainforest healthy.

Most cassowaries eat fruit from many different plant families. They swallow fruits whole, even big ones like apples. They have a very short digestive tract. This helps them eat fruits that might contain poisons. As they move through the forest, they drop seeds in their waste. This spreads seeds across the jungle floor and helps new plants grow. This makes them a keystone species, which means they are very important for their environment.
