They are flightless birds. This means they cannot fly. But they are the fastest birds on land! They can run at 70 kilometers per hour.

There are two main kinds of ostrich. One is the common ostrich. It lives in many parts of Africa. The other is the Somali ostrich. It lives in the Horn of Africa.

These birds are omnivores. An omnivore is a living thing that eats both plants and animals. Most of their food is plants. They eat grass, fruit, and roots. They also eat small animals like mice and lizards. They even eat insects like grasshoppers. Ostriches do not have teeth. Instead, they swallow sand and pebbles. This helps them grind their food in their stomachs.

Ostriches lay very large eggs. These are the largest eggs of any land animal. Humans have used ostrich meat and eggs for a long time. People also use their leather and feathers.

Some use feathers to decorate hats. Others make oil from ostrich fat.
