Orenburg is a city located in Eastern Europe within Russia. It sits near the border of Kazakhstan and is southeast of Moscow. This city is very special because it lies right where Europe and Asia meet. The Ural River flows through the area and acts as the boundary between these two continents. You can even walk across a pedestrian bridge to move from one side to the other.

Building the city was a difficult job that took several tries. In 1734, leaders wanted a new fortress to help trade and find riches like gold and garnets. A man named Ivan Kirilov first began work on a settlement near the Or and Ural rivers. Later, Vasily Tatishchev tried to build a town on Red Mountain, but the land was too rocky and had no trees. Finally, in 1743, Ivan Neplyuev built the city in its current spot. He chose a place surrounded by forests and fields where the Yaik and Sakmara rivers meet.

Orenburg has a long and busy history. It served as a military outpost to protect the borders. From 1920 to 1925, it was actually the capital of the Kazakh ASSR. The city also had a different name for many years. Between 1938 and 1957, people called it Chkalov to honor a famous pilot. During World War II, many businesses moved there because the city was far from the fighting. This helped the city grow much larger and stronger.

Today, Orenburg is a major center for many different things. It is a big hub for trains and has a large airport called Orenburg Tsentralny. The city is also known for its energy work with oil and gas. Many people go there to learn at large schools like Orenburg State University.

If you visit, you will notice the weather changes a lot. The summers are long and hot, while the winters are long and very cold. You might see beautiful crafts being made by local people. Orenburg is famous for its hand-knitted shawls. These shawls have very thin, lacy designs that look like cobwebs. Even though they look delicate, they are very warm. It is a place where history, nature, and modern life all come together.
