It is the center of its own region, called the Astrakhan Oblast. The city sits on both sides of the Volga River. It is located in the upper part of the Volga Delta. This area is made of eleven islands in the Caspian Depression. The city is about 100 km away from the Caspian Sea. One very special fact is its height. Astrakhan is 28 meters below sea level. This makes it the lowest city in all of Russia.

The weather in this part of the world is quite extreme. It has a continental climate, which means the seasons change a lot. The summers are very hot and can reach 40 °C or higher. In fact, it is one of the driest cities in Europe. Most of the rain falls during the six hottest months. The winters are the opposite, with cold temperatures. In January, the average temperature is about −3.6 °C. This wide gap between hot and cold is called a large temperature amplitude.

Astrakhan has a very long and busy history. It was once the capital of the Astrakhan Khanate. This was a land ruled by the Astrakhan Tatars. A famous traveler named Ibn Battuta visited the area in the 1300s. He called the Volga River the Athal and said it was one of the greatest rivers in the world. Later, Ivan the Terrible conquered the area in 1556. He helped move the city to its current site in 1558.

The city has changed many times over the centuries. In the 17th century, it became a gateway to the East. Many merchants from places like Persia and India lived there.

This made the city feel very international. In the 1940s, the city saw action during World War II. German planes even bombed the city's harbor and oil terminals. Today, the city is a major center for fish processing.

People have been working with fish here for nearly 400 years.

Today, Astrakhan is a place where many cultures meet. The people living there come from many different backgrounds. Most are Russians, but there are also many Kazakhs and Tatars.
