Orenburg is a major administrative center located in Orenburg Oblast, Russia. It sits in Eastern Europe, southeast of Moscow. The city is positioned near the border with Kazakhstan. It lies along the banks of the Ural River. This river is very important because it marks the boundary between Europe and Asia. Because of this location, Orenburg is a place where two continents meet.

The founding of the city was a complex process involving several different attempts. In 1734, the Russian Empire wanted to expand its influence into Asia. A cartographer named Ivan Kirilov began developing a settlement near the confluence of the Or and Ural rivers. He believed the area could provide riches like gold, garnets, and lapis lazuli. He also hoped to open trade routes to places like India. However, a later manager named Vasily Tatishchev found the first site unsuitable. He attempted to build a town on Krasnaya Gora, also known as Red Mountain. This site was too rocky, treeless, and far from the river. Construction at Red Mountain never actually started.

The third and final attempt succeeded under Ivan Neplyuev. In 1743, he established the city at its current location. He chose a site surrounded by forests and fields. This site sits where the Yaik and Sakmara rivers converge. This location is now the historical center of Orenburg. The city served as a vital military outpost on the border. It also became the center for the Orenburg Cossacks. To protect the territory, the empire built a line of forty-six forts. Orenburg was a key part of this defensive system.

Orenburg has experienced significant historical shifts and name changes. From 1920 to 1925, the city served as the capital of the Kazakh ASSR. It later joined Russia when the republic was renamed in 1925. Between 1938 and 1957, the city was known as Chkalov. This name honored Valery Chkalov, a famous Soviet pilot. A five-meter bronze sculpture of Chkalov was placed on a seven-meter pedestal on the Boulevard. This promenade is also called Belovka. During World War II, the city's distance from the invasion helped it grow. Many Soviet enterprises moved there for safety, which spurred economic growth.

Today, the city is a vital economic and transportation hub. It is a major railway center thanks to several completed lines. These include the Samara-Zlatoust line from 1876 and the Orenburg-Tashkent line from 1905. The city also manages the Orenburg Tsentralny Airport. The energy sector is a massive part of the local economy. Companies like Orenburgneft and Orenburggazprom operate here. These companies focus on oil and gas processing. The city's location makes it a key link for moving resources.

Education and culture are central to life in Orenburg. The city is a regional center for many large universities. Orenburg State University was founded in 1955. There is also Orenburg State Medical University, established in 1944. Other institutions include the Orenburg State Agrarian University and the Orenburg State Pedagogical University. The city is home to many museums, such as the Regional Museum of History and Natural Science. It also features several theaters, including the Maxim Gorky State Drama Theater.
