Operation Car Wash was a massive investigation into corruption in Brazil. It began in March 2014 with a small case. Investigators were looking at a car wash in Brasília. They were checking for money laundering, which is hiding where money comes from. This small search soon uncovered a huge scheme. It involved the Brazilian federal government and many state-owned companies.

The scheme worked through a system of bribes and kickbacks. Officials at state companies asked for extra money from private suppliers. This money was used to fund political parties or for personal gain. A large part of this happened at the oil giant Petrobras. Contractors formed a cartel to share government work among themselves. They also gave illegal payments to politicians to keep the system going. This included work on football stadiums and even a nuclear power plant.

Many important people were caught up in the probe. The investigation involved businessmen, senators, and even former presidents. Leaders like Lula, Collor, and Temer were implicated. Prosecutors led by Deltan Dallagnol worked with Judge Sergio Moro. They used a special law called a plea bargain. This law allowed people to get smaller sentences if they helped the investigation. This helped find many people who broke the law in Brazil and other countries.

The scale of the investigation was truly huge. Investigators worked with authorities in 61 different countries. Companies like Odebrecht admitted to bribing officials in twelve different nations. These companies had to pay billions in fines and restitution. By 2017, nearly three hundred people had been accused of crimes. The investigation even caused the number of electronic monitoring bracelets to grow. It went from under 10,000 to more than 24,000 in just a few years.

Over time, the investigation faced many hard challenges. In 2019, leaked messages showed that the judge and prosecutors worked too closely. This led people to wonder if the work was fair. Some judges even called the methods used by the investigators unfair. The task force was officially ended on February 1, 2021. This whole event changed how people in Brazil think about their leaders. It remains a very important part of the country's history.
