People visit the festival to enjoy amusement rides and games. They also visit food stalls to eat traditional Bavarian dishes. The festival brings millions of people together in a big party. In 2023, a record 7.2 million people attended the event.

There are many special ways the festival works each year. The official start happens at exactly 12:00 p.m. in the Schottenhammel tent.

The Mayor of Munich taps the first keg of beer. He then shouts, "O'zapft is!" which means "It is tapped!" After this, twelve gunshots are fired to signal the start.

Visitors can also try a fun unofficial sport called Masskrugstemmen. In this game, people hold a heavy one-liter glass mug with one arm. They must keep their arm outstretched for as long as possible.

The history of the festival began with a royal wedding.

On 12 October 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen were married. Munich officials invited the public to celebrate on the fields. The very first festival featured a horse race for the people.

In 1811, an agricultural show was added to help Bavarian farmers. Over time, the festival grew to include many more traditions.

Many important details make the festival unique today. There are 14 large tents and 20 small tents at the grounds.

These large tents are temporary wooden structures used for food and drink. Only six specific breweries in Munich are allowed to serve beer there. These beers must follow special rules called the Reinheitsgebot.

One big tradition is the costume and marksmen parade. This parade has about 8,000 participants walking through the streets. They wear traditional clothes called Tracht, such as the Dirndl dress.

Oktoberfest connects many different parts of Bavarian culture. It links old royal traditions with modern fun fairs.

The festival uses music, food, and parades to show local pride. Some people even use the festival as a model for other events. For example, a Greek delegation once used it as a model for the Zappas Olympics. This shows how much the world notices this special German event. It remains a place where history and celebration meet every year.
