A long time ago, a strange whale lived in the sea.

Scientists found its fossils in Chile and Peru. This whale is called Odobenocetops. Its name means a whale that seems to walk on its teeth.

Odobenocetops was a very unusual animal. It had two large tusks in its upper jaw. These tusks were not the same size. One tusk was much longer than the other.

Scientists think the long tusks belonged to males. This is called sexual dimorphism. It means males and females look different. The tusks were likely for social roles, not for fighting. They were too fragile for combat.

This whale did not have teeth. It was a molluscivore, which means it ate molluscs like clams. It likely used a strong lip and its tongue to suck food out of shells.

It may have used jets of water to find food on the ocean floor. It could move its head more than a beluga whale. This helped it search for food. Some species had a melon. A melon is a part of the head used for echolocation, or finding things with sound.
