Odobenocetops was a very unusual type of whale that lived a long time ago.

Its fossils have been found in the marine layers of Chile and Peru. Scientists have identified two different species in this group. The first is called Odobenocetops peruvianus. The second is a slightly younger species named Odobenocetops leptodon. These whales were quite different from the dolphins or whales we see today.

Their strange bodies make them a very special part of history.

This whale had a very unique way of finding and eating food.

It was a molluscivore, which means it ate animals like clams. Instead of using teeth, it likely used a powerful upper lip. It might have used jets of water to uncover shells on the ocean floor. Then, it would use its tongue like a piston to suck the soft parts out of the shell.

This way of eating is very similar to how a modern walrus behaves. Its neck was also very flexible, allowing for a great range of head motion.

One of the most famous things about this whale was its tusks.

These tusks grew from the upper jaw and were not the same size. This difference is called sexual dimorphism, which means males and females look different. In males, one tusk was much longer than the other. Females likely had two tusks that were about the same size.

While they look like the tusks of a narwhal, they evolved on their own. Scientists believe these tusks were for social reasons rather than fighting because they were too fragile for combat.

Researchers began learning about this animal in 1990.

A single skull was found in the Pisco Formation in Peru. A scientist named Christian de Muizon described it in 1993. He gave the animal its name, Odobenocetops. This name comes from Greek and Latin words. It means a "whale that seems to walk on its teeth." This name was chosen because the whale's feeding style was similar to a walrus.

De Muizon also created a new family name for these whales.

There are many interesting details about how their heads worked.

Most whales have a melon, which is an organ used for echolocation. Echolocation is a way to find things using sound. In the older species, the melon was very small or missing entirely. Because of this, they may have had very large eyes to see better. The younger species, O. leptodon, did have a melon. This suggests the two species were closely related but had different ways of sensing their world.
