Injuries can also affect the lungs, the skeleton, and the skin. These injuries happen for many different reasons. Sometimes they come from physical hazards like loud noise or extreme temperatures. Other times, they come from chemicals, radiation, or even insect bites.

Even animals can cause injuries in farming jobs. For example, livestock-related injuries are a major cause of nonfatal harm on dairy farms.

Scientists and groups have studied these risks for a long time. In the year 2000, there were about 2.9 billion workers around the world.

During that time, occupational injuries caused the loss of 3.5 years of healthy life for every 1,000 workers. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks these numbers closely. In 2012, they reported nearly 3 million nonfatal injuries and illnesses. These injuries cost businesses a total of $198.2 billion. They also resulted in 60 million lost workdays.

Different countries see different types of dangerous jobs. Globally, the most hazardous jobs are in farming, fishing, and forestry.
