This can happen through the spread of special materials. It also happens through the spread of tools used to make them.

During World War II, a few nations began research. The United States was the first to use a nuclear weapon. It used two bombs against Japan in 1945. After that, an arms race began. Many more countries tested their own weapons.

To help keep peace, leaders made a big rule. This is called the NPT. It is a treaty that many nations signed. The NPT says some countries should not make these weapons. It also helps countries use nuclear power for good things.

Some tools have a dual use. This means they can make power or weapons. To watch this, a group called the IAEA was made. The IAEA checks on nuclear tools. They want to make sure they are used for peace. They help stop the spread of weapons to keep the world safe.
