During the Cold War, a big race began.

This was a race for nuclear weapons. The United States and the Soviet Union led the race. They both wanted the strongest bombs.

The race started during World War II. The US led a project called the Manhattan Project. At the same time, spies helped the Soviet Union learn secrets. In 1949, the Soviet Union tested its first bomb. Soon, both sides made even bigger bombs called thermonuclear weapons.

Both sides also raced to build ways to carry the bombs. At first, they used large planes. Later, they built missiles for ships and land. This group of ways to carry bombs is called a triad.

Many countries also made nuclear weapons. These included the UK, France, and China. Other nations like India and Pakistan also made them.

Leaders later worked to slow the race. They signed treaties, which are official agreements.

These deals helped limit the number of bombs. In 1991, the Cold War ended. Today, the US and Russia still have many weapons.
