Nuclear proliferation is the spread of nuclear weapons to more countries. This happens when nations get the special materials needed for bombs. They also get the technology to design and build them.

Some people fear this will lead to more wars. They worry it could make international relations less stable. However, some people believe that having these weapons can actually prevent conflict. This idea is known as deterrence theory.

Making these weapons is a very hard job. It requires specific materials like highly enriched uranium and plutonium.

Many tools used for nuclear power have a "dual use." This means the same machines can make electricity or weapons. This connection makes it difficult to monitor everything. Controlling the spread of these tools is a main goal for global security.

Research into these weapons began during World War II. The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada worked together on it. Germany, Japan, the Soviet Union, and France also did their own research. The United States was the first to use a nuclear weapon in war. It used two bombs against Japan in August 1945. After this, a nuclear arms race began between many nations.

Many countries have joined this race over time. The Soviet Union tested its first weapon in 1949. The United Kingdom and France developed weapons in the 1950s and 1960s. China also developed weapons during the Cold War. Today, five nations are recognized as nuclear weapon states by a major treaty. These are China, France, Russia, the UK, and the United States. Other nations like India, Pakistan, and North Korea also have nuclear weapons.

To manage these risks, leaders created the Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT. The NPT was signed in 1968 and became active in 1970. It helps many countries agree not to make weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, was also created in 1957. The IAEA has two big jobs to do. It helps spread peaceful nuclear energy to the world. At the same time, it checks to make sure materials are not used for bombs.
