The anti-nuclear movement is a large group of people working together. They want to stop the use of various nuclear technologies. This includes both nuclear weapons and nuclear power.

Some groups focus on protecting the environment. Other groups are made of professional workers or scientists. These groups work at local levels and across the whole world. They want to change how governments use nuclear tools. They believe these tools can be dangerous for people and the planet.

Many people joined this movement because of specific events. In the early 1960s, people worried about testing nuclear weapons.

In 1961, about 50,000 women in the United States marched in 60 different cities. They were part of a group called Women Strike for Peace. Later, in 1975, a project for a power plant in Wyhl, Germany, was cancelled. This was a big success for protesters. It inspired many other people in Europe and North America to speak up.

Accidents have often caused more people to join the movement. In 1979, an accident happened at Three Mile Island. This led to a protest in New York City with 200,000 people.

In 1986, the Chernobyl disaster occurred in Ukraine. After this, about 150,000 to 200,000 people marched in Rome.

Another major event was the Fukushima accident in Japan in 2011. This event made people all over the world worry about nuclear power again.

Protests have grown to include millions of people over the years. In 1982, one million people marched in New York City. They were protesting against nuclear weapons.

In 1983, about 600,000 people joined a protest in West Berlin. In 1977, up to 200,000 people gathered in Bilbao, Spain.

These large numbers show how many people care about these issues. Many different groups, like Greenpeace, have helped lead these efforts.

Today, the movement still affects how countries make energy. Some countries, like Australia and Norway, do not use nuclear power at all.

Other places, such as Germany and Italy, are phasing out their nuclear plants. This means they are slowly stopping their use of nuclear energy. However, the number of working nuclear reactors has stayed nearly the same for 30 years. Nuclear electricity production has actually grown since the Fukushima disaster. The debate over how to use energy continues today.
