A novelist is a person who writes novels. A novel is a long story. These writers can create fiction, which is made-up, or non-fiction, which is about real things.

Some novelists do this as a job to earn a living. Other people write novels as a hobby or an avocation. Writing a novel is a huge task that requires a lot of skill. Most writers struggle to get their very first book published. Once they are published, many writers continue to release new books. However, only a tiny number of people become famous literary celebrities.

Writing a book involves many different steps and methods. Many people try to write a novel, but finishing one is hard. Some writers join groups to help them practice their skills. For example, a group called National Novel Writing Month happens every November. They encourage people to write a novel of 50,000 words. In 2010, over 200,000 people joined this group. They wrote a total of more than 2.8 billion words together!

Some authors choose to self-publish their work instead of using a company. This means the writer handles the selling and promoting themselves.

History shows us that the word "novelist" has changed over time. The term comes from the word "novel." The Oxford English Dictionary says the word could once mean an innovator. It could also mean a person who is new at something. The main meaning we use today appeared in a 1633 book. This book was written by a person named C. Farewell. Records show the word first appeared in books as early as 1521.

This long history shows how storytelling has always been important.

Novelists come from many different backgrounds and social classes. In the past, many writers were from wealthy or educated families. This was because they had more time to study and write. However, working men and women began publishing novels in the 1900s. For example, Walter Greenwood wrote a book in 1933. In the 1950s, a group called the "Angry young men" wrote about working-class life. Some writers even use their stories to share political ideas. They might write to show the truth about how people live.

Age and personal life often play a big role in writing. Many novelists start writing when they are very young children. The writer Iain Banks began writing when he was eleven years old. He finished his first novel at age sixteen using a pencil. Another writer, Patrick O'Brian, published a book at age fifteen. Even though they start young, many do not publish until later. A writer's own life often shapes the characters in their books. Their home, culture, and experiences can change how people read their stories.
